Occupational Therapy
What is Occupational Therapy?
As an occupational therapist (OT), at the core of my approach is a deep belief in the value of a person's ability to reach their own potential and wellbeing.
Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to supporting people with diverse abilities, including people with a learning disability, autistic people, and older adults living with dementia.
My goal has always been to support people to live their lives to the fullest, fostering independence, and solving any problems that may prevent people from reaching their goals.
As an occupational therapist, I embrace a humanistic perspective that recognises the importance of addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of a person's life. I firmly believe that every person deserves the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that contribute to their overall well-being.
Occupational therapists (OTs) are highly skilled professionals who can provide a wide range of assistance and support across various areas of life. Here are some of the ways an occupational therapist can help:
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Occupational therapists can assess and provide interventions to help individuals improve or regain their ability to perform essential daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating. They may suggest adaptive techniques, assistive devices, or modifications to the environment to enhance independence.
Functional Mobility: OTs can help individuals enhance their mobility and functional abilities, whether it involves walking, using a wheelchair or other mobility aids.
Cognitive Skills: Occupational therapists can work with individuals to address cognitive challenges, such as memory loss, attention deficits, problem-solving difficulties, and impaired executive functioning.
Assistive Technology: Occupational therapists are knowledgeable about assistive technology and can assess individuals' needs for devices such as adaptive equipment, communication aids, computer access tools, and environmental control systems. They can provide training on using these technologies effectively.
Work-related Support: OTs can assist individuals in returning to work or maintaining their job performance. They can assess the physical and cognitive demands of the job, provide ergonomic recommendations, suggest workplace modifications, and offer strategies for managing work-related tasks.
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support: Occupational therapists can support individuals with mental health conditions by addressing daily life challenges, stress management, coping skills, and enhancing social participation. They may provide counseling, develop coping strategies, and facilitate engagement in meaningful activities to promote mental well-being.
These are just a few examples of the broad spectrum of assistance occupational therapists can provide. They are skilled in analysing a person's individual needs, collaborating with them to set goals, and implementing personalised interventions to improve overall functioning, independence, and quality of life.
